Epoxotherm: Specs and Uses
Uses:
- Any underwater situation where conventional industrial insulation cannot be applied.
- Protects concrete from being damaged by expansion and contraction due to thermal shock caused by the direct sun and change of seasons.
- Temperature-control concrete pools, containment areas, or dams for better efficiency where UV and infrared cause expansion to surface when under water.
- Control and hold heat inside swimming pools. Applied along with Enamo Grip as a pool lining, it controls heat conduction to the groundside of the pool wall.
- Repairs, seals and insulates basement walls for houses and businesses.
- Reduces the levels of condensation on cold water pipes.
- Reduce condensation on walls (i.e. ice arena change rooms) to resist the growth of harmful mold and mildew.
- Insulates hoppers on asphalt trucks to reduce heat loss in route
Application:
Although Epoxotherm can be applied by non-professionals, SPI recommends using a SPI certified applicator.
Preparation:
- Surface must be clean with no loose debris or particles, rust, dirt, oil, films or residues of any kind. Epoxotherm will cover previous coatings if they are fully adhered to the surface
- Mechanically stir base, as ceramics will tend to settle
- Mix curing agent into base and let sit for 30 minutes before applying
Application methods:
- Airless or pot sprayed (preferred method): tip size .035; apply in four (4) coats
- Roller or brush: apply in four (4) coats
- Add an additional coat for vertical surfaces
Applied rate:
- 64 sq. ft./gal. (6 sq.m./gal.)
Film thickness:
- Wet: 40 mils (1 mm) per coat
- Dry: 30 mils each coat (750 microns) per coat
- Total dry thickness, 120 mils (3 mm) recommended or four (4) coats
Temperature:
- 32 degrees F (0 degrees C) – 100 degrees F (38 degrees C)
- Colder temperatures will increase dry time (cure time can double at temperatures below 40 degrees F)
Dry times:
- 1 hour to touch
- 5 hours to recoat or handle
Full cure:
Precautions:
- 4 hour pot life (normal temperatures of 70 degrees F (20 degrees C)). Shorter pot life at hotter ambient temperatures.
Limitations:
- As with any epoxy, Epoxotherm will chalk and loose gloss when exposed to UV rays. For outdoor use, overcoat with Enamo Grip or Super Therm®
- Do not use as a stand-alone floor coating
- Do not used directly on food preparation surfaces
- Do not apply over chlorinated rubber. Even after sandblasting, the chlorination can attack the solvents and brittle the coating
- Epoxotherm is not as elastomeric and does not adhere to metal, tar, rubber, etc. as well as Super Therm®. Must rough surface of substrate for best adhesion.
